Agartala: Tripura holds the first rank in political violence among all the states in Northeast, claimed Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Pradyot Kishore Manikya DebBarman during a press conference on Monday evening.

With the end of filing nominations for the three-tier panchayat polls on Monday, reports of attacks came from across the state which the opposition parties alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) carried out.

The TPCC president said that a number of Congress party workers have come under attack in different locations of state while they were on the way to file the nomination papers. “Congress candidates were attacked by goons of the ruling BJP while they had gone to file their candidature in Bishalgarh, Sonamura, Satchand RD block. Opposition nominees are being assaulted and attacked in front of IPS-rank officers and inside the district magistrate’s office, but nobody is being arrested so far,” DebBarman claimed.

Mahila Congress president Laxmi Nath and former minister Billal Miah are facing attacks by hooligans of the ruling BJP, he said. “Candidates in Kamalpur were forcefully stopped for hours from reaching the block office,” he added.

Slamming chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, the TPCC president said that the CM had promised to make Tripura a model state with zero violence after the Lok Sabha poll vendetta. He changed the DGP and also shuffled the administration but the range of violence is increasing with every passing day, DebBarman said.

“Today, the fight is between BJP and Congress as the opposition CPI-M is nowhere within a year of loss after ruling the state for 25 years,” he said.

“We have filed nominations in a good number of seats for the three-tier level and will give a tough fight to BJP,” said Deb Burman, adding: “BJP supporters will try to stop INC candidates from reaching the blocks for scrutiny but we are certain that may what come on the way, we will not leave the field vacant to them.”

“We have filed FIRs in the police station and will also meet the higher authorities in some days if the poll violence does not stop. The campaign for the three-tier panchayat poll will begin from Wednesday,” DebBarman added.

Rubbishing all the allegations raised by the Congress, BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said that BJP does not believe in violence and has always been into a healthy fight with the opposition.

“Pradyot himself has taken the law in his hand by slapping a person inside the police station. He is always accompanied by the extremist persons, listed criminals, like Ranjit Debbarma. Thus raising finger towards towards us is baseless ahead of polls,” Bhattacharjee said.

The three-tier panchayat polls for the 6,111 Gram Panchayats, 419 Panchayat Samiti and 116 Zilla Parishad seats will be held on July 27 and the results will be declared on July 31.
