Dhalai district on boil hours after newly-elected BJP Parliamentarian Rebati Kumar Tripura’s residence was vandalised; party supporters clash with IPFT workers
Agartala: Hours after the residence of newly-elected Tripura East MP Rebati Kumar Tripura was targeted by miscreants early on Saturday morning, clases have reportedly erupted between supporters of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) over the incident.
Dhalai is about 120 km from state capital Agartala.
As per reports, a car and two two-wheelers parked in front of the MP's house were set ablaze by miscreants in the wee hours of Saturday. Following this, supporters of the two parties allegedly took out attacks on each other.
Speaking with reporters, Rebati Kumar Tripura said that the 'planned attack' on his family was carried out by some supporters of IPFT. "Three vehicles parked in front of my house were vandalised," he said.
The MP, who is currently in Delhi, added, "IPFT leaders have lost their mind since I won the Lok Sabha elections with a margin of over two lakh votes. A few days ago, my father even received threat calls from IPFT workers."
The attack was reportedly carried out under the leadership of IPFT divisional committee member Prem Sadan Tripura. "I have talked with the Dhalai SP and also instructed my party workers to file an FIR against the miscreants involved in last night’s incident.
Talking with EastMojo, IPFT assistant general secretary Mangal Debbarma said: "We have received information that the house of Tripura East MP was actually not attacked. Instead, the house of IPFT leader Prem Sadan Tripura was set on fire by BJP supporters claiming that the MP’s house was attacked under my leadership, which is totally untrue."
The house of another IPFT leader Jibon Joy Reang at Ambassa in Dhalai district came under attack last night, he added.
"We have logged an FIR with the Ambassa police station against a number of people who were involved in the attack over our leaders," Debbarma added.
Speaking with EastMojo, Dhalai SP Sudipta Das said a car and two two-wheelers were parked at a distance of 25 mt from the MP’s residence. While the car was damaged, two bikes were set ablaze.
“The house one Prem Sadan Jamatia, who is also the IPFT divisional committee member, came under attack by a group of angry mob following the incident in front of the MP’s house,” the SP added.
"The area has been cordoned off with security to control the law and order situation across the area. We are also investigating the whole matter and soon people behind the incident will be nabbed," the SP added.
