Agartala: The Tripura government has decided to resume the distribution of sugar at government-run fair price shops from June 12. Every household with a valid ration card will receive 1 kg of sugar at a subsidised rate of Rs 23, said Tripura food, civil supplies and consumers affair minister Manoj Kanti Deb on Friday evening.

In April 2017, the distribution of sugar was stopped for all ration-card holders. It was being distributed to only Antyodaya card holders which constitute only about 1.01 lakh of the total population of the state, the minister while addressing a press conference.

As promised, prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, distribution of sugar for the remaining 8.02 lakh ration card holders has started from Wednesday. However, for the month of June, 3 kg of sugar will be made available to each card holder at a subsidised rate of Rs 23 per kg. The government will spend Rs 17.80 crore from its fund for the same, informed Deb.

Further, the minister said the government has also continued the paddy procurement in state and after successful procurement of kharif crop in 2018-19, now the Rabi crop will also be procured at a reasonable price set for the farmers.

The food, civil supplies and consumers affairs ministry in cooperation with the department of agriculture and farmers’ welfare has started the procurement from June 10 with minimum selling price (MSP) of Rs 1,750 per quintal, but a farmer has to sell at least 2 quintals to a maximum he can, added Deb.

Of late, 18 blocks will get the facilities as in 22 locations the procurement centre will be set up for the farmers. The farmers will receive the money in their saving accounts within four working days post procurement of paddies.

The government has planned to procure a total 10,000 metric tons of paddy by spending Rs 2.25 crore.
