Both 35-yr-old Shyamali Chakma and son Gunamoy took their Higher Secondary exams conducted by Tripura Board of Secondary Education together this year; results declared on Thursday
Agartala: Shyamali Chakma (35) and her son Gunamoy (18) have proved that learning has no age limit by appearing for the Class XII board exams conducted by the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) together this year and successfully clearing them.
The Chakmas are residents of Gandacherra in Tripura's Dhalai district -- located about 115 km from state capital Agartala.
Speaking with EastMojo, Shyamali's husband, Priti Kumar Chakma, said, "I have been waiting for this moment for a long time since my wife decided to appear in the board exams this year."
"After getting married in 2000 and with the birth of our child a year later, my wife could not continue with her studies. It was only in 2015 when she decided to take her Madhyamik [Higher Secondary] exams. She successfully cleared it in her very first attempt," Priti Kumar said.
Meanwhile, their son Gunamoy Chakma was studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidayalaya, 82 Miles in Dhalai district. It was Gunamoy who insisted that his mother started preparing for the Class XII board exams last year, explained Priti Kumar.
Shyamali has received a lot of praise from people across the area, including the newly elected MP Rebati Kumar Tripura. "It was difficult to continue with my studies but after her husband and my son supported me morally, I decide to pick up the pen and write my papers in the board exams this year," said Shyamali.
Priti Kumar further said although he insisted his wife to take tuitions, she never wished for any as she believed in preparing for the exams on her own. Shyamali took admission in the Kavi Guru Rabindranath Vidya Bhawan to take her exams.
Shyamali secured 162 out of 500 marks in the exams from Humanities stream. Her son Gunamoy secured 414 out of 500 appearing from the Commerce stream.
Meanwhile, Priti Kumar, who himself is a Class X pass-out, has decided to send his wife to Gandacherra district college for further studies. For now, the couple plans to go to Guwahati on June 10 to attend counselling at Gauhati Commerce College for their son on June 15.
