Agartala: The Tripura High Court on Friday rejected the anticipatory bail plea filed by Dhananjoy Tripura, an MLA of the ruling Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), after being accused of allegedly raping an indigenous woman for months on the pretext of marriage.

The division bench of Justice Arindam Lodh after hearing both the petitioner’s and victim’s counsels rejected the bail application filed by the accused legislator.

On May 19, the victim filed a written complaint with the Mandai police station which was later transferred to East Agartala Women police station registered under section 417/376 of IPC.

The victim claimed that both of them have lived together for a long time and had also performed the engagement ceremony (Mangalacharan) on March 8, 2017. A few days later, the state assembly elections were declared and consequently he got engaged with election work.

After winning the elections, Dhananjoy started avoiding her and also refused to marry her. Further, the elder brother of the accused demanded an amount of Rs 8 lakh from the victim as dowry.

To resolve the matter, a meeting was also called where IPFT supremo Narendra Chandra Debbarma was also present but Dhananjoy refused to marry her.

The counsel of the victim public prosecutor Biswajit Choudhury informed the court that the accused is a legislator and having his access to power is trying to threaten the victim, and similarly on May 28 the victim also threatened to withdraw her case against Tripura.

Earlier, the Tripura Commission for Women investigated the allegations against Dhananjoy and found that the allegations were true.

In a statement, Tripura Commission for Women chairperson Barnali Goswami said that despite all developments, the victim wants to stay with Dhananjoy as husband and wife.

Meanwhile DSP Koyel Deb Barman said that the proceeding is going on and according to the instructions of Tripura High Court they are taking required measures in the case.
