The incident happened when the ‘princess’, sister of Tripura Congress chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya DebBarman, was on her way after attending a rally in Tulashikhar
Agartala: Pragya Deb Burman, the Congress candidate for East Tripura constituency, was reportedly attacked while en route to Khowai after attending a rally in Tulashikhar on Thursday afternoon.
Speaking to reporters, Deb Burman alleged that after concluding her rally, she was going ahead with supporters when a group of Indigenous People Front of Tripura (IPFT) workers tried to attack her by pelting stones at her convoy.
She said, “With prior permission from the police department, a public rally was organised in Tulasikhar area of Khowai district this [Thursday] afternoon and after attending the programme, we were on our way back to Khowai when IPFT supporters tried to attack us by throwing bricks and stones on the convoy.”
The Congress candidate further alleged that the people who tried to attack her were intoxicated and had gone there upon instructions from their senior leaders. Deb Burman added that they also attacked other opposition parties during their poll campaign.
Police officials informed that the youth involved in the act was nabbed by the personal guards of the Congress candidate who were ahead of her convoy and took him to Tulashikhar police station.
The accused was identified as Mintu Debbarma who reportedly tried to throw brick bats at the candidate’s convoy when a pilot car raced ahead and nabbed him.
Mangal Debbarma, assistant general secretary of IPFT, denied the allegations on the involvement of his party workers in the incident and said the arrested person was an IPFT supporter and coincidentally he was present at the spot, but, he has no link with the attack.
“It was staged by the Congress and they are trying to put the blame on IPFT to bring down the morale of IPFT supporters,” he added.
