Agartala: A day after a junior resident doctor at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Agartala was attacked in public, the Tripura High Court held a special late-night hearing on Friday and rejected a bail order of the five accused involved in the case.

The victim, Dr Dipankar Debnath, was allegedly thrashed by the relatives of a pregnant woman who blamed him for her death, alleging negligence.

Debnath was admitted to the trauma centre at GBP Hospital where his condition was stated to stable.

The special court was set up after an appeal by CM Biplab Kumar Deb on behalf of the state government. During the hearing held at 9 pm on Friday, Chief Justice Sanjay Karol issued a stay order for the five accused till April 23.

The five accused were charged with abduction of government servant on duty, attempt to murder and obstruction of public servant on duty, among other sections of the IPC.

Condemning the brutal attack, CM Deb said that the government will stand with the doctor.

Following the insecurities of doctors and health staff in government hospitals and health centres, health minister Sudip Roy Barman on Friday wrote a letter to CM over the issue.

After massive agitations were staged by the two associations of doctors at the premises of IGM Hospital on Thursday, CM Deb on Friday categorically mentioned that the state government will not tolerate any individual for violating law and will also not spare anyone from legal proceedings following the attack on the doctor.
