Udaipur: Udaipur, located in Tripura's Gomati district, is famous for its beautiful lakes. Most notable of them all is Kalyan Sagar, also considered a sacred pond. But did you know that the 'city of lakes' is also home to many temples? Udaipur is dotted with several architecturally beautiful ancient temples.

Take for instance, Tripura Sundari. The over 500-year-old temple is the holiest pilgrimage site in the region. It is popular for being one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindus. The temple was built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 AD.

Udaipur was the former capital of Tripura kingdom.

Bhubaneshwari, on the banks of river Gomati, is another temple worth mentioning. Built by Maharaja Govinda Manikya, the beautiful temple is perched upon a three-foot elevated porch. Flower-patterned motifs adorn the pillars and the stupas.

"Human sacrifices were made during the reign of the Maharaja here. At present, no pujas are conducted here. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) now looks after the temple," said Prithi Das, a temple caretaker.

Gunabati Mandir Gucchha, a group of three brick temples, dates back to 1668 AD. One of the temples was built in the name of Maharani Gunabati. It resembles other contemporary temples of Tripura except that topmost parts are without stupa.
