Sikkim takes a giant step in fighting drug menace

Rehab centres welcome move to amend existing laws, decriminalise use of contraband substances

Gangtok: Rehabilitation centres as well former drug addicts in Sikkim have welcomed the state government’s recent announcement to amend the current laws and decriminalise the use of contraband substances.

According to the existing laws in Sikkim, those dealing in contraband substances can be sent to prison for a period of six months to five years and fined up to Rs 1 lakh.

"The laws to punish drug peddlers will be made more severe and stringent but drug consumption will not be treated as an offence but rather an illness which needs treatment or therapy," Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling had said at a recent gathering in Gangtok.

Chamling had also said that he was trying to bring Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt to Sikkim and inspire the youth of the state to overcome addiction.

Meanwhile, the health department of the state said that it has already resumed its study on the causes of drug abuse and ways to prevent the menace.
