Agartala: Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev‘s convoy was attacked on Friday on the first day of the party’s outreach programme “Tripurar Jonno Trinamool”.
The attack was allegedly carried about by BJP workers in Amtali Bazaar on the outskirts of Agartala. TMC workers travelling with her were also injured in the attack. The injured were rushed to Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital.
The vehicle Dev was travelling in was also severely damaged.

The TMC leader alleged that CRPF jawans were present when they were being attacked.
Speaking with reporters later, Sushmita Dev said, “When I got off the vehicle, one of the guys snatched my phone and bag, and started running. I managed to take my bag back. As soon as I turned around, I saw that everyone was openly being beaten up. There were CRPF and traffic officials present.”

The TMC leader added that those who carried out the attack “did not have any shame in their eyes”.
“They did not even cover their faces,” she added.

“It means that they have political and police backing. And they have the power; that is why they were able to openly beat up Trinamool Congress workers.”
“I condemn this. And I would like to mention one more thing. I read in a newspaper today that quoted the BJP saying that the contest will be with CPI(M). But CPI(M) is not in the field, Trinamool Congress is. The attack carried out on us proves that we are the strongest opposition here. We will continue with our work and nobody can stop us,” Dev added.
The TMC leader along with senior leader Subal Bhowmik and other leaders had visited the Amtali Bazaar area to campaign for the upcoming municipal elections, which would take place in November.
Earlier on Thursday, Dev had announced that the party would launch a campaign — “Tripurar Jonno Trinamool” (TMC for Tripura) — to reach out to the people of the state.
The campaign will continue for 10-12 days, covering all the 60 assembly constituencies in 58 blocks of eight districts.
“We will go to the people, interact with them and listen to their problems. Three teams have been formed for the campaign,” Dev had said.
