Tech revolution: Xiaomi unveils see-through TV, Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition

When it’s turned off, the display looks like a piece of glass. When it’s turned on, images appear to float in thin air, or so, says Xiaomi

New Delhi: As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, Xiaomi, on late Tuesday, unveiled two Ultra phones – Mi 10 Ultra and Redmi K30 Ultra – including a see-through smart TV – Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition – the world's first mass-produced transparent OLED television.

“When it’s turned off, the display looks like a piece of glass. When it’s turned on, images appear to float in thin air, or so,” said Xiaomi, in an official statement.

Priced at RMB 49,999 (Rs 5,36,838 approximately), it comes with a 55-inch transparent OLED panel with a 150000:1 static contrast ratio, 10-bit colour, and 93% coverage of DCI-P3. Apart from a wide colour spectrum, it also has a 120Hz refresh rate and 120Hz MEMC technology.

The smart TV has a custom MediaTek 9650 chipset with Xiaomi's AI Master Smart Engine image processing that offers over 20 optimisation algorithms and dedicated optimisation for five major use scenarios. There’s also Dolby Atmos support. The design of the television includes a 5.7mm thick frame placed on a circular base, which cannot be wall-mounted.

Transparent display technology isn't particularly new. The technology has existed on both OLED as well as LCD panels, although the latter doesn't look as impressive due to the need for a backlight and thicker glass. In 2019, LG showcased a transparent TV with promises of bringing it into a production TV in the future. However, the company is yet to follow-through on that, thus making Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition the first mass-produced TV of its kind.

Speaking about rolling out the device in global markets, Daniel D, Senior Product Marketing Manager tweeted, “Lots of questions coming in about Xiaomi launch, #1 being whether we'll be launching these incredible products across our global markets. For the moment, we don't have plans for official global channels, but stay tuned for future news!”

For now, the transparent smart TV will be available only in China.
