Guwahati: Three start-ups from eight northeastern states are likely to get UAE investment soon. Meghalaya’s Smoky Jack (Jack Fruit), Hill Wild (Manipur) and Cold Mountain (Nagaland) were able to draw the attention of foreign investors in the the ‘Northeast Fortnight’ in Dubai from March 4 to 17.

“Delegates from Grand Hypermarket have arrived in Northeast to discuss possible tie-ups with the startups for marketing of the product, including contract farming with a possible investment size up to Rs 50 crore,” North Eastern Development finance corporation (NEDFi) chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) PVSLN Murtty informed here on Wednesday.

The fortnight witnessed participation from various representatives of the eight northeastern states, North Eastern Council (NEC) and ministry of development of the northeastern region (DONER).

Now available in the local market, Smoky Jack is sourced from farmers of Laskein block, Jaintia Hills, where it is naturally grown and processed followed by good manufacturing practice, is rich in curcumin content that is known for helping to fight infections, inflammations and other ailments. 

The two other start-ups from Meghalaya – Eri Weave and Shillong Bamboo (Meghalaya) – also got prominence in the international expo.

“A brick unit from Assam- ZERUND got their second meeting call from a Dubai-based investor Sanjib Advani who is proposing to tie up with the company to set up plastic embedded brick manufacturing plant in Dubai as well as Rajasthan, in a revenue-sharing model. The discussion is still in process and no quantifiable outcome has come,” Murty said. 

Another start-up – My3d Selfie Private limited also received a group of investors connect and scheduled his next meeting at Dubai for a Rs 15 crore investment discussion, Murty also said.

“We have also an initial discussion with Chief Finance Officer & Board Member, KAAF Investments Nandi Vardhan Mehta to explore an investment opportunity of Rs 50 crore, especially for Northeast start-ups,” Murty further said. 

KAAF is an investment management company that invest funds of US$ 500 million. KAAF has numerous investments, one being in the largest company in the Middle East. They also have investments in around 30 startups in India. 

“We brought a total of 30 start-ups from the Northeast to the Dubai expo,” he also informed. 

He said discussions were also on with several other start-ups for foreign investment. These are: Assam’s TTLT India Private Ltd, Automobill Technologies Pvt Ltd, Drones Tech Lab (a unit of RC Hiobbytech solutions Pvt Ltd), Encamp Tourist Pvt Ltd, BikozeeEcotech Pvt Ltd, My3d selfie Private Ltd, DaSpatio Rhobotique Laboratory Pvt Ltd, Zerund Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, ER Ceye Care Pvt Ltd, Dong Valley Creations Pvt Ltd, Manipur’s Taret Foods Pvt Ltd, Green Biotch Eco Solutions Pvt Ltd, NECATEL Solutions Pvt Ltd, iLogitron Technologies Pvt Ltd, Twosis Garden Pvt Ltd, Hillsland Eduventure Private ltd, Medilane Health Tech and Consultancy Service Pvt Ltd, Thangvune Privilege Services Private Ltd, Ingelei Paper & Print Pvt Ltd, Hills Wild Private Ltd, Arunachal Pradesh’s Far Fast Tourism Pvt Ltd, Nagaland’s Inchon Tea Products (Cold Mountain Organic), Pristine Food, Jome Foods Pvt Ltd, Sikkim’s Cas Collective LLP and NE Origins Pvt Ltd and Mizoram’s Lailen Consulting Pvt Ltd, Tribeland Coffee.

This time participation from the state of Manipur was large as the state government has come forward to sponsor the units to join the international expo.

“We had also a talk with an Israel minister who expressed his willingness to visit Assam to explore potentialities for investment,” the CMD said.

“Some of the sessions and conferences focused on highlighting the investment opportunities in the eight north-eastern states and presentations by the states followed by interaction and deliberations. Besides the business meetings, an array of cultural performances including traditional music, dances, performances by well-known bands, fashion shows highlighting the region’s unique heritage and film screenings also hosted at the Pavilion,” he said.

“The footfall of tourists from across the world. People loved getting to know all the wonderful nuances from the unexplored part of Northeast through its craft, culture and exquisite agro-horti & spices,” he added.
