Another day but the same old result for the Highlanders. NorthEast United FC’s torrid time continued as they faced a disappointing 1-3 loss against ATK Mohun Bagan in match 89 of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 at PJN Stadium, Margao, on Saturday.
This win has taken ATKMB to a comfortable second position in the points table, with 26 points from 14 matches played. NEUFC continue to languish at the bottom with 10 points. V.P. Suhair scored the solitary goal for NEUFC while Joni Ensio Kauko, Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh scored the three goals for the Mariners, handing them a convincing win and taking their unbeaten run to ten games.
The Highlanders had a good start as they played a very attacking game of football. In the 17th minute, Marcelo Pereira and Suhair Vadakkepeedika combined beautifully to give NEUFC the lead as Suhair broke the deadlock.
However, the lead did not stay for long as a few minutes later Joni Ensio Kauko scored the equalizer for ATKMB. NorthEast United in its plan to attack failed to keep their defense strong which hurt them badly.
It was an interesting first half but Liston Colaco scored just before the end of half time to give The Mariners a lead, going into the next half of play. Just a few minutes after half time, Manvir Singh sealed the deal for ATKMB as he scored the third for ATKMB. The Highlanders tried to play catch up but it was all too late.
They did create a few chances but the ATKMB defenders made sure no more goals were scored. Joni Kauko was awarded the Hero of the Match Award.
Only three games remain for NEUFC as they next face Bengaluru FC on Friday, 18th February.
