A brilliant long ranger from Khassa Camara in stoppage time helped NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) triumph over FC Goa 2- 1 in Match 17 of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday. This was NEUFC’s first win of the season and they are now placed eighth in the points table with 4 points. FC Goa is yet to earn a point and are currently at the bottom of the table.

Both the teams came into this match looking for their first win of the season. FC Goa clearly looked the team to beat as the match progressed. However, a miss pass by FC Goa was picked by Camara in the 10th minute and passed on to Rochharzela, who made no mistake and broke the deadlock for NEUFC.

The Highlanders could not hold on to their lead for long as Alexander Romario Jesuraj scored the equalizer for FC Goa just a few minutes later. Both the teams played an attacking game but FC Goa clearly looked the more dominant side in the first half. Goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury was tested a lot and he played a very key role with several crucial saves.

Both the teams created opportunities in the second half but failed to convert. Coureur almost scored the second for NEUFC in the 60th minute when his shot hit the post. FC Goa had their share of chances and came close to scoring at various moments but failed. The Gaurs had the majority of the ball possession too. Edu Bedia went into attack in the final minutes and challenged the NEUFC defenders. However, just when it looked like ending in another draw, Khassa Camara’s brilliant long-range shot in stoppage time sealed the deal for NEUFC.

In what came as a huge blow, NEUFC’s star player Federico Gallego will not be able to participate any further in the remaining matches of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) due to a knee injury. Speaking on his injury, NEUFC Head Coach Khalid Jamil said, “We will definitely miss Gallego. He is a quality player. But we won’t make any excuses. We are preparing another option. We have Pragyan, Sehnaj and Imran, who is back in the squad after missing two games due to injury.”

Northeast United FC will next play against Odisha FC on Friday, December 10.

All the action from the Hero ISL 2021-22 tournament will be telecast live on the Star Sports Network, Hotstar and Jio TV.
