NorthEast United FC – 1 (Suhair Vadakkepeedika 50’)
NorthEast United FC’s poor form continued as they lost 1-2 against Chennaiyin FC in Match 12 of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Monday. Anirudh Thapa scored the winner to hand his team two wins on the trot. NEUFC thus remains winless, after a loss against Bengaluru FC and a goalless draw against Kerala Blasters in their first two games.
NEUFC started the match with very positive intent, displaying an attacking brand of football. They created chances but could not capitalize. NEUFC’s first major blow came when a challenge from Narayan Das caught Federico Gallego in the knee and he had to be carried off the field, owing to an injury. They clearly looked the more dominant side while he was on the field but energies shifted quickly after his injury. Both the teams created chances and had their moments in the first half but it was Lallianzuala Chhangte who took advantage of a poor clearance and broke the deadlock for the Marina Machans, giving them an edge, going into halftime.
The lead did not last long. Sloppy work from the Chennaiyin goalkeeper helped VP Suhair score the equalizer in the 50th minute. NEUFC came close to going ahead in the game when a long-range shot from Gurjinder Kumar hit the post. The Highlanders had a couple of chances but could convert none. Chennaiyin Captain Anirudh Thapa scored the winning goal in the 74th minute. With this win, Chennaiyin FC moved to second place in the points table with 6 points, only behind ATK Mohun Bagan. Lallianzuala Chhangte was awarded the Hero of the Match Award for his brilliant performance.
NEUFC, meanwhile are placed 9th having earned 1 point from 3 games and will next play FC Goa on December 4.
