Guwahati: Manipur weightlifter Mirabai Chanu hit two birds with one arrow as she created a new national and world record at the Women’s 49 kg Clean and Jerk event to clinch the bronze medal in the Asian Weightlifting Championship being held at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The former world champion and Padma Shri awardee lifted 86 kg in snatch and a world record of 119 kg in clean and jerk, making it a total of 205 kg, her personal best. Her final lift of 119 kg set a new world record, going past Chinese lifter Jiang Huihua’s previous record of 118kg.

Also, her personal best has gone up to 205 kg from 203 kg (88 kg+115kg) at the National Championship in February last year, creating a new national record.

With this achivement, the 26-year-old has also confirmed her Tokyo Olympic spot as she has now competed in the six mandatory qualifying events.
