IPL likely to have a new team in 2021; mega auction on the cards
With less than five months to go for the 2021 IPL season, there is a high chance we might see the addition of a new team, most likely from Ahmedabad.
According to reports, BCCI is also preparing to have a full-fledged mega auction around January or mid-February next year ahead of the 2021 season. Earlier, there was little information about the mega auction due to the pandemic outbreak and with a few franchises asking the board to defer it for a year.
An IPL franchise official in a report said that the BCCI asked the franchises to prepare for the mega-auction in a couple of months, although nothing has been made official, the BCCI is preparing for it.
With the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad renovated to have a capacity of 1,10,000 the venue is all set to be the home for a new franchise, with corporates already setting themselves up to own a new team in the upcoming season.
However, the addition of a new team in the tournament will not affect the retention ability of the other franchises because it would compromise on the team's brand value.
Earlier in 2011, IPL had ten teams with Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala as the new additions. However, the Kochi Tuskers franchise was terminated from the tournament the very next year, with IPL 2012 and 2013 being played with nine teams.
The Pune Warriors franchise eventually pulled out of the IPL in 2014, following which the IPL has been played with eight franchises.
