Morgan, Karthik take KKR to a competitive 163/5 in quest to stay alive in IPL 2020
KKR skipper Eoin Morgan(34 off 23) and former skipper Dinesh Karthik(29 off 14) scored 52 runs in the last four overs, making a significant recovery from 105/5, as they eventually took KKR to a respectable total of 163/5 in their first innings against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Put into bat first after losing the toss, the Kolkata Knight Riders openers Shubhman Gill and Rahul Tripathi gave KKR a decent start as they added 48 runs the powerplay, before Tripathi was dismissed for 23 in the last ball of the powerplay by T Natarajan. Tripathi, just before his dismissal seemed a bit uncomfortable after he got hit on his right forearm with a quick delivery earlier in the over.
Nitish Rana joined Shubhman Gill in the middle and they added 39 runs for the second wicket, a partnership majorly contributed by Nitish Rana, as he took on SRH lead bowler Rashid Khan. Shubhman Gill looked good in patches for his 37-ball-36 before he got out to a spectacular catch from Priyam Garg off Rashid Khan's bowling in the 12th over.
Shubhman's dismissal was quickly followed by Nitish Rana's wicket, as it was Priyam Garg once again with a brilliant running catch off Vijay Shankar's bowling in the 13th over, suddenly leaving the KKR in a spot of bother at 88/3 with two new men in the middle, yet to get off the mark.
Unfortunately for KKR, Andre Russell continuing his bad run this season, was once again dismissed cheaply for just 9, in the 14th over, when he tried to smash one over the park off Natarajan's bowling but found Vijay Shankar right at the boundary line.
It was a great 58-run-partnership off just 30 deliveries between Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik that powered the Knight Riders to a rather competitive total of 163/5 at the end of their 20 overs, a score that seemed quite unlikely at one point with the wicket getting slower as the day progressed.
