It was a night all about the youngsters of Kolkata Knight Riders as they beat the mighty confident Rajasthan Royals by 37 runs, at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday. An excellent batting effort from Shubhman Gill, a terrific and collective bowl effort from Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Varun Chakravarthy guided by Pat Cummins at the top, handed the Rajasthan Royals their first defeat of the season.
Going by trend of the season, once again the skipper winning the toss decided to have a bowl. Put into bat first, the Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a pretty decent start as they reached 82/2 at the halfway stage through their innings, after losing their opener Sunil Narine early. Shubhman Gill showed some superb class as he played some solid looking shots against an in form Jofra Archer who fired in some brilliant deliveries first up, with the pace consistently over 150 Kph.
Gill and Nitish Rana added 46 runs for the second wicket before Rana(22) was dismissed in the tenth over.
Young Shubhman Gill played a classy knock of 47 runs off 34 deliveries, before he was dismissed caught & bowl by Jofra Archer in the 12th over.
Andre Russell showed some form for KKR with the bat as he scored a quick 14-ball-24 smashing three big sixes, before he held out to Unadkat towards the longer boundary off Rajpoots bowling. Eoin Morgan played a quiet yet effective innings, as remained unbeaten on 34 off 23 deliveries, thus taking KKR to a respectable total of 174/6 at the end of their 20 overs.
Coming out to chase a competitive total, the Rajasthan Royals, for the first time in the tournament playing in a bigger ground, struggled big time, as the KKR bowlers ripped through the Rajsthan top order and were reduced to 42/5 in the eight over.
Pat Cummins was absolutely brilliant with his line and length coupled up with great pace as he dismissed his Australian teammate Steve Smith in the second over itself after troubling him throughout the over.
It was a show by the KKR youngsters from there on as Shivam Mavi dismissed the in-form Sanju Samson(8) and the dangerous Jos Buttler(21) in two back to back overs, followed by Kamlesh Nagarkoti, who dismissed Robin Uthappa(2) in the very first ball that he bowled and then dismissed Riyan Parag(1) just two balls later, thus reducing the Rajasthan innings struggling at 42/5. The youngster show for KKR continued, as KKR’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy clean bowled Rajasthan’s previous match hero Rahul Tewatia(14) and then picked up the dangerous Jofra Archer(6) with a beautiful delivery and a stunning catch from Kamlesh Nagarkoti.
Tom Curran showed some resilience, as he tried to reduce the margin of defeat with an unbeaten 54 off 36 deliveries, eventually ending the Rajasthan innings with a boundary to reach 137/9 at the end of their 20 overs.
KKR with this win over Rajasthan moves up the points table to the second position directly from seventh position, and will be mighty pleased with the performance of their youngsters Shivam Mavi( 4-20-2), Kamlesh Nagarkoti(2-13-2) and Varun Chakravarthy(4-25-2)
