Crystal Palace got off to a brilliant with a goal in the 7th minute from Andros Townsend

Manchester United suffered a shocking 3-1 defeat in their opening Premier League match of the season, at the hands of Crystal Palace on Saturday, with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) once again the centre of attention.

Crystal Palace started off brilliantly as Andros Townsend scored their first with just seven minutes into the game. Crystal Palace went into half-time with a lead of 1-0 on the board as it was the only goal scored in the first half.

Going into second half, United brought in Mason Greenwood, but things got more difficult for United as the VAR decided that the referee Martin Atkinson should have a look at the pitch-side monitor, and eventually awarded Palace with a penalty, against Victor Lindelof for a handball.

Ayew took the penalty kick for Palace, but United goalkeeper De Gea made a brilliant save, but it was VAR in action again, as it informed Atkinson that De Gea came off his line and eventually the penalty was retaken by Wilfried Zaha, who converted the opportunity this time taking the Palace’s lead to 2-0.

United’s new signing, Donny van de Beek, tried to bring his team back in the game with a goal on his debut in the 80th minute, but it was United’s former forward, Wilfried Zaha once again, who scored a late double in the 85th minute, thus ensuring a deserved win for Palace by 3-0 against his former team, Manchester United. This was United’s first defeat in a season-opener at home since 2014.
