The Aussies consigned England to its first loss in a bilateral ODI series at home since 2015
Twin tons from Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey thrived Australia to a match as well as a series victory, after a precarious start against the hosts England in the third and final ODI at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Deciding to bat first after winning the toss earlier in the day, England got off to a disastrous start as Mitchell Starc dismissed Jason Roy(0) and skipper Joe Root(0) in the two balls of the innings reducing the hosts to 0/2 in the first over itself.
English opener Jonny Bairstow steadied the ship for England as he brought up his 10th ODI century with a belligerent 112 from 126 deliveries. Bairstow carved an innings-saving 114-run partnership for the fifth wicket with the in-form Sam Billings(57 of 58) before a quickfire 53* of 39 deliveries from Chris Woakes helped England to just go past the 300-run mark, ending the innings with 302/7 on the board.
Coming out to chase a big total in the series decider, the Aussies didn’t have the greatest of starts either, as they lost their top order pretty and were left struggling at 73/5 in the 17th over. It was a Maxwell-Carey show from there on as they put on massive 212-run-partnership for the sixth wicket which ensured the Ausssies consigned England to its first loss in a bilateral ODI series at home since 2015.
Both Maxwell(108 of 90) and Carey(106 of 114) fell in the dying stages of the game, but Mitchell Starc scored the winning runs for Australia in the last over with a cool head and a swinging bat.
It was England's only series loss of its international summer, after having won against the West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan and Australia in various formats, in a season where all of its games have been played without fans.
The England and Australia players due to play in the IPL will be moving to the UAE on Thursday, September 17, 2020
