An astonishing maiden international century from Sam Billings was not enough for England, as a beautifully stitched century-stand between Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh, along with an exemplary bowling effort from Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa helped Australia to register a 19-run victory over England in the first ODI at Emirates Old Trafford, on Friday.

Put into bat first, Australia lost their openers early as Warner (6) and Finch (16) were dismissed cheaply.

A resilient effort from Marcus Stoinis(43) rebuilt the Australian innings, before a brilliant 126-run partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell took Australia to a match-winning total of 294/9 at the end of 50 overs. While Mitchell Marsh anchored the Australian innings scoring 73 runs of 100 deliveries, Glenn Maxwell was just destructive as he scored a lightning 77 of 59.

Chasing a rather decent total, England got off to a horrible start being reduced to 57/4 within 20 overs. It was Bairstow and Billings for England, who stopped the rot and did some damage repair, with a 113 run partnership of 115 deliveries for the fifth wicket. Bairstow scored a 78-ball fifty, his slowest in ODIs, before he was dismissed for 84 by Adam Zampa, with England still needing 125 runs from 14.4 overs.

Sam Billings who scored his highest ODI score on Friday with an unbeaten 118 showed some excellent hustle after Bairstow’s dismissal, but with no real support from the other end, the target of 295 never quite came within reach, as England eventually fell short by 19 runs.

Australia now lead the three match ODI series by 1-0 against the hosts.
