Even though Messi is not allowed to go this summer, he can negotiate with other clubs from January next year and leave for free when his contract expires in July
Guwahati: Barcelona legend Lionel Messi confirmed that he would stay on in Barcelona, but only because it is “impossible” for any team to pay his release clause. And because he loves the club, he does not want to face it in court.
Even though Messi is not allowed to go this summer, the 33-year-old Argentine legend can negotiate with other clubs from January next year and leave for free when his contract expires in July.
In an explosive interview with Goal.com Messi said that he thought and was sure that he was free to leave before his club said that the 700 million euro (£624m) release clause would have to be met, for him to leave Barcelona.
In the interview, Messi mentioned that he had told the president that he wanted to leave and, the president always said that at the end of the season he could decide if he wanted to go or wanted to stay, and in the end, the president did not keep his word.
Speaking about how he is forced to stay at Barcelona, Messi said, “Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the 700 m clause, and that this is impossible.”
“There was another way, and it was to go to trial. I would never go to court against Barca because it is the club that I love, which gave me everything since I arrived.”, Messi added.
Clearing speculations about the reason he wanted to leave Barcelona, Messi made it very clear that it was not because of the defeat against Bayern in the Champions League he had been thinking about it for a long time.
Messi also made it very clear that, although he is not happy to stay at Barcelona, his attitude towards the club will not change. “I am going to continue at Barca, and my attitude is not going to change, no matter how much I have wanted to go”, Messi said.
He also said that he will always do his best for Barcelona, the club which he joined as a 13-year old and termed Barcelona as the club of his life.
Playing for Barcelona, Messi has scored 634 goals and won 34 titles.
