Now Taekwondo championship goes online
Guwahati: The India Taekwondo is all set to host the country’s first-ever online national Taekwondo Poomsae Championship from September 28 to October 4. The board announced on Wednesday.
Divided into the colour belt division and black belt division, the competition will be based on individual capabilities. The colour belt division consists of three categories, and the black belt division (medal events) will have eight categories.
Athletes will follow safety guidelines, and they will in no way come in contact with any of the other participants or organizers as each of the athletes will be submitting a video, in which they will be performing their Poomsae. In Taekwondo, Poomsae is a defined pattern of defence-and-attack forms which is vital to perfect techniques.
The tournament is supported by the World Taekwondo. "I am heartened to see that India Taekwondo has taken the first initiative to kick start a new era for Taekwondo in India," said Dr. Choue, President, World Taekwondo, in a media release.
The World Taekwondo Europe hosted the first-ever online taekwondo championship in the world, earlier this year. With the sport being suspended and people unable to leave their homes due to the pandemic outbreak, the World Taekwondo Europe in partnership with Spanish Taekwondo equipment company Daedo hosted the online taekwondo championship from May 4 to May 10.
Speaking to a leading media house, the President of India Taekwondo, Namdev Shirgaonkar said that all the safety measures and guidelines will be followed amid the pandemic outbreak. Shirgaonkar believes that tournament will prove to be a boost for all the athletes who have been waiting for very long now to compete.
