Guwahati: Bayern Munich sent out an emphatic message as they demolished the European heavyweights Barcelona, in Lisbon on Friday, with a historic score of 8-2 to reach the semifinals of the Champions League.

The match got off to a cracking start with Thomas Muller putting Bayern ahead in the 4th minute of the game itself.

Although David Alaba conceded an own goal in the 7th minute of the game, putting Barcelona 1-1 on the scoreline, the German champions seemed on a different level altogether against their Spanish rivals, as they were already leading by 4-1 in the 31st minute itself, with goals from Ivan Perisic(21’), Serge Gnabry(27’), and Muller(31’) again in quick succession.

It didn’t get any better for Barca in the second half, although Louis Suarez tried to pull things back with a left-footed goal in the 57th minute of the game, Bayern just seemed to toy around with Barcelona, as the German side inflicted more pain into Barcelona, with four more goals from Joshua Kimmich(63’), Robert Lewandoski (82’) and Philippe Coutinho (85’, 89’), thus defeating Barcelona with a massive 8-2 score. With Messi failing to contribute, Barcelona had very little opportunities to take control of the game.

The loss was Barcelona's worst-ever in the Champions League, while Bayern became the first team to score eight goals in a UCL knockout-round game.

After the match, Barca defender Gerard Pique said: "I'm in pain. We all are. We can't compete like that. It's very, very tough to take.” Speaking about the future of the club, the Barca defender further added “Nothing more is worth saying. The club needs changes. Not just the players, I don't want to point out anyone.”
