Champions League: Man City, Lyon in QFs as Real Madrid, Juventus knocked out
Guwahati: Manchester City on Friday defeated Real Madrid by 2-1 and advanced into quarterfinals of the Champions League with a 4-2 aggregate over Real Madrid, while Lyon knocked out Juventus in the race for the quarters, with a 2-2 aggregate draw.
City got off to a brilliant start, as Raheem Sterling scored a goal with just 8 minutes into the game, capitalizing on a shocking error by Raphael Varane, in Manchester on Friday. Although Madrid was seen struggling without their star defender Sergio Ramos , out due to suspension, Karim Benzema bought the visitors back in the game with a header past Ederson in the 28th minute. But that didn’t prove enough for them as Varane’s miserable day continued and he gifted the ball to Gabriel Jesus in the 68th minute, who scored an easy goal taking the game away from the 13-time champions. City won the second leg of the tournament exactly with the same score as the first leg.
While at the Juventus stadium, Christiano Ronaldo’s heroics with two goals, including an unstoppable long-range goal gave Juventus a 2-1 win over Lyon on Friday. But Ronaldo’s heroics went in vain as Lyon reached the quarter finals on away goals, with 2-2, an aggregate draw. Ronaldo finished the season with 37 goals, the most by any player in a single campaign for Juventus. Accomplishing this feat, the Portuguese star beat the 35-goal tally of Ferenc Hizrez, a record which stood for 95 years.
The Manchester City will now face off against the Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter finals next week, in Lisbon.
