GANGTOK: Gangtok woke up to clogged roads and massive traffic jams on Friday even as vehicles were still stranded mid-road at the time of publication of this report in the afternoon.
The chaos-like situation on National Highway 10 is the result of a massive surge of government vehicles, all attempting to reach the 3rd-year anniversary celebrations of SKM government at Manan Kendra in Gangtok.
Many government vehicles were seen using sirens to make room through the traffic. The vehicle movement, which is ideally two-lane, had an extra lane on Friday for the government vehicles to reach the venue of the event.
Notably, an ambulance was stuck in the long queue of government vehicles for well over 30 minutes at Tadong, enroute to Gangtok.
People across the capital complained about the lack of taxi services and being stuck in jams for hours this morning. Many students complained about not reaching their schools and colleges on time. Others complained of being stranded for hours in the jam.
“I left from 6th mile around 8:30 am, and an hour and a half later, I am still in Tadong. A stretch that ideally takes 10 minutes to travel. With the kind of jam in place today, there is very less chance I may reach office before noon,” a citizen shared on social media.
The Sikkim government had issued a circular on May 25, urging every government official above the under-secretary rank, including school principals and headmasters from around Gangtok, to attend the event ‘positively’.
And evidently, all officers and SKM party supporters from across Sikkim have converged to the state capital.
