GANGTOK: A vehicle SUV plunged into Dikchu Dam Reservoir in Mangan District on Wednesday evening. According to reports from the Mangan District Administration, one person – a government servant driving the vehicle – is feared dead.

The accident occured at the bridge connecting Mangan and Gangtok districts, on the north edge of the bridge.

The Bolero vehicle plunged around 150 feet into the River Teesta Stage Five Dam. The Reservoir level was reduced to find the body, with over 8 hours of discharge overnight.

On Thursday morning, the vehicle was found severely damaged, following which the victim was identified as a government servant. Some of his belongings from the vehicle suggested the identity.

However, the body is yet to be recovered. The victim was reportedly returning from Gangtok after a meeting, with the intent to return back to his base in Mangan District Administration.

Rescue operations are currently being carried out by National Disaster Relief Force, SDRF, Sikkim Police and Mangan District Administration.
