GANGTOK: The surge in COVID 19 cases in Sikkim has breached another record for 2022, with 322 new positive cases recorded in the state in the last 24 hours. The state has recorded a total of 841 cases since the start of this year.

The populous East Sikkim district reported the most number of cases at 228, followed by 66 in South Sikkim, 23 from West Sikkim and five from North Sikkim. The cumulative positivity rate in the state is at 11.6 per cent, while for January 11, the rate was at 17.3 per cent. The weekly positivity rate in the state is at 14.9 per cent.

So far, no Omicron case has been detected in Sikkim while the report of genome sequencing sent by the State Health Department to West Bengal in the first week of January is awaited.

Since the start of the new year, the state has recorded one COVID death so far. There are 796 active cases in Sikkim currently of which 784 have been categorised as asymptomatic or mild. Six patients have been classified as moderately ill, while another six patients have been classified as severe.

There are 746 patients in home isolation currently, 365 of them are in urban east Sikkim district, 132 in rural East, 116 in West Sikkim, 119 in South and 14 in North Sikkim.

There are 37 patients admitted in hospitals, with 22 of them admitted in STNM Hospital, 11 in Central Referral Hospital and four patients are in district hospitals.

On January 11, a total of 1,851 tests were conducted of which 615 were RT PCR, resulting in 176 positive cases, while 1233 were RAT tests resulting in 146 cases.
