Soreng: A day after Soreng officially became a district along with Pakyong, Soreng-Chakung constituency legislator Aditya Golay said the district has a ‘clean slate to run as an E- district.’

Aditya recalled, “This (district creation) was an old demand that dates back to even before I was born. When we compared Soreng as a subdivision, the population here was high, enough to make consideration for a district. There is quite some distance to cover from Soreng to Geyzing for our local people taking their work to the district capital. People from Ribdi-Bharang or Sombaria, Rinchenpong, were far-flung for the people to commute to the district capital. Now, Soreng will be a suitable district capital when the works of our people happen in Soreng, it will be a big relief for the people of this area in South West Sikkim.”

The youngest legislator in Sikkim highlighted how the District Magistrates and Superintendent of Police for Soreng will come from April 2022. He said, “We are not magicians to make district offices immediately, that is not possible at all. But how can we manage our existing public assets, make use of vacant spaces, where are the repairs needed which need attention before the construction of something new? There are various structures made by the tourism department, some of which can not be used in the current scenario owing to their condition. We are reviving such places such that District Magistrates and Superintendent of Police can be housed in them. There is a need for District Offices.”

Golay termed the district creation to be historic in a way. He shared, “Whoever will be the DCs and SPs of the two new districts, will be the first in the district, which will be a great honour for them. They will be shouldering a big responsibility as well. How to run the Police and Hospitals in the district, how to bring different necessary departments to the districts. The people of Soreng will support whoever will come as DC or SP.”

Aditya said the two new districts will be working on a clean slate, claiming ‘there are a lot of opportunities with the new district.’

He said, “The problems that the existing districts are facing from sewerage management, water supply, and traffic congestion. We have an opportunity to work keeping 50-100 years in mind. The biggest example of trouble is the time taken to reach Gangtok from Ranipool due to traffic congestion. Hence, when we learn from problems in other districts, we can make the new districts as model districts.”

On pushing for a digital administration, Golay said, “One of the bright sides of COVID 19 was, we learned the Electronic or E-way of living, from moving files and documents digitally, so we can make advent at running E-administration making the entire district an E-district such that the upcoming generation will not face problems. The Chief Minister has directed on the advancement of IT Sector in these two districts.”
