Gangtok: In a race to be the first state to be fully vaccinated, Sikkim news portals have been sharing what can only be termed as ‘Fake News’, claiming Sikkim to be the first fully-vaccinated state. The report shared across different social media platforms in Sikkim has spread like wildfire.
In reality, as per the latest data on immunisation shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Sikkim stands at 5,19,996 doses, with the first dose accounting for 98-99 per cent, while the second dose stands at 4,16,372 doses accounting for 78 per cent.
Even if the number of doses was not exact, Goa became the first to inoculate 100 per cent of its population with the first dose in early September, followed by few Union territories as well as states like Himachal Pradesh, which have claimed to have inoculated 100 per cent of its people with just first dose, and not the second dose.
Speaking with EastMojo, State Immunisation Officer Dr Phumzay Denzongpa stated, “No, we are not fully vaccinated yet. Yes, the numbers for the first dose may be very close or may have crossed over the 100 per cent mark. The first dose reaching 100 per cent is pretty afresh. Elsewhere, we are still receiving COVID-19 cases, so when that happens the individual is not supposed to be inoculated with the vaccine for almost three months. So, how can we attain 100 per cent so soon? In terms of the second dose, we have just breached the 80 per cent mark. Until the second dose covers all the population, we cannot claim to be 100 per cent or fully vaccinated. Yesterday’s vaccination coverage shows that we are close to 80 per cent with the second dose.”
