Gangtok: Sikkim Democratic Front condemns the merger of Sikkim and Darjeeling claiming that Sikkim is the weakling in the merger talks. SDF asserted that the ‘roots of Sikkim being uprooted and being sold as medicine’, highlighting how the special status of Sikkim as protected under 371F will be sold with the merger.

Addressing a press conference on July 3 at the SDF party office, spokesperson MK Subba stated, “Sikkim cannot comment on the permanent solution for Darjeeling, but we can only extend support. Sikkim needs to wake up, revisit the strength of 371F, which is being eyed for amendment. We want Gorkhaland, but there is a limit we cannot cross. It is not Darjeeling-Sikkim people talking, it is merely being made an issue to dampen the geopolitics in the region by hardliners like Gorkha Rashtriya Congress”, stated Subba, asserting how the merger is not the solution.

SDF claimed how Sikkim is the weakling in the issue of merger. “The eye could be on 371F amendment like they did abrogation of Article 370 and 35 A in Kashmir, they won’t deny that. Everyone tries to connect with Kashmir on such issues as many other states and regions have such special status”.

There has been quite a buzz in national and regional level politics after claims of memorandum submission to West Bengal Governor and also of claims of GRC submitting to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, but CM Golay and his ruling front Sikkim Krantikari Morcha have denied such development happening.

SDF further said, “Sikkim unable to present papers, there is no concrete statement on what government wants. SKM saying if people agree, is something we don’t understand. Geopolitics is the biggest concern. We have a major expense, we are not here to levy the credit to the nation”.

SDF inclined on how If North Bengal is chicken neck and Sikkim is the head of the chicken. But merger is still illegal and unconstitutional, claims SDF.
