Gangtok: Sikkim recorded 118 new cases of COVID-19 by Sunday, with 60 from East Sikkim. This is the highest jump in 2021, with April alone recording 402 cases in 16 days.

Among the cases, only 7 were tourists, against the common notion that COVID-19 is spreading from people coming from outside. Eight patients, including two tourists, are currently hospitalised.

Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) has been initiated at the state borders to keep a check on the spread from outside the state, which recorded 14 COVID-19 cases, according to the State Health Bulletin on Saturday.

Among the 60 in East Sikkim, Gangtok recorded 28 cases. In North Sikkim, among the six cases, four were recorded from the tourism hamlet Lachung.

Forty-six new cases were also recorded on Sunday morning from the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Rabongla, South Sikkim. Forty-four students, a staff and a family member have tested positive. All the students were in boarding.
