GANGTOK: Sikkim’s capital city, Gangtok, witnessed a heavy hailstorm along with almost 60 mm rainfall in a span of 2 hours on Friday afternoon.

The storm started at about 3:30 pm and continued till 5:30 pm.

While many feared it was a cloud burst, GN Raha of Sikkim Meteorological Department clarified that it was not.

“There was prediction for rainfall and hailstorm for past five days. However, this was not a cloud burst. Rainfall has been recorded in all 4 districts of the state. The same is predicted to continue even tomorrow with hailstorm. So, the advisory has been issued to Sikkim State Disaster Management to remain prepared for any kind of natural disaster, be it further storms or even landslides. But so far no landslide has been reported,” Raha said.

Many farmers have complained about their crops being destroyed. The weatherman says that’s inevitable, as during this season hailstorms are common in the region.
