Gangtok: Sikkim reported its biggest single-day spike on Wednesday with 108 new cases of COVID-19. With this, the state tally stands at 438, while active cases have reached 326.
East Sikkim district reported 61 new cases and has recorded a cumulative figure of 316 cases; West Sikkim reported one new case and has a cumulative figure of 30; South Sikkim reported 46 new cases with a cumulative figure of 91 cases. North Silkim’s total cases stand at one with no new cases reported.
Health director-general Dr Pempa Tshering Bhutia in his daily health bulletin said, “Among the new cases, 102 have been reported in Rapid Antigen testing out of 1368 tests conducted while other six in RT-PCR out of 515. 37 samples were tested in TrueNat all of which came out negative.”
While giving the breakdown of the cases, Bhutia said, “Five positive patients reported in RT-PCR testing are of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel of Lingdum, East Sikkim and one is a primary contact from Timburbong, West Sikkim. In Rangpo, East Sikkim, 48 returnees were tested with Rapid Antigen Testing of which all resulted negative, other 80 primary contacts were also tested of which 19 reported positive. 70 other primary contacts were tested in Chanatar near Rangpo of which 33 reported positive”.
All the positive patients from Rangpo and Chanatar area have already been shifted to isolation center of Himalayan Pharmacy Boys’ Hostel in Mazitar, East Sikkim.
Dr Bhutia said 52 cases were reported from Rangpo itself.
In Mamring, South Sikkim 345 tests were conducted of which 37 reported positive. Dr Bhutia also informed that the nine positive cases of July 19 has also been reported on Tuesday’s report due to which 46 cases have been reported from South Sikkim all of whom have been shifted to SICUN Quarantine Facility in East Sikkim.
In Rongli and Dalapchand, East Sikkim, a hotspot of cases, 405 tests were conducted of which only one reported positive.
Similarly in Rhenock, East Sikkim 169 tests were conducted which all resulted negative. In Singtam three reported positive of 38 samples taken for Rapid Antigen testing.
One of the three is an electrician from Singtam District Hospital due to which all the health workers of the hospital would be tested.
Dr Bhutia informed that Rapid Antigen testing kit is being used in a huge numbers but now the department will try to conduct testing in TrueNat or RT-PCR as Rapid Antigen testing kits need to be kept for emergency purpose.
“State has requested more kits but they are unsure of getting. All the positive patients who are asymptomatic are being kept under the doctors of Primary Health Centres and positive patients are being admitted in their district itself”
