Khelo India: Sikkim bags maiden medal in weightlifting event

Sikkim opened its account in the medal tally at ongoing 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020 in Guwahati, Assam by bagging bronze in U-21, 81 kg men’s weightlifting

Gangtok: In a moment to cheer, the Himalayan state of Sikkim on Monday opened its account in the medal tally at the ongoing 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020 being held in Guwahati, Assam.

Bringing laurels to the state, Sikkim’s weightlifter Pemba Tshering Sherpa bagged the state’s maiden medal-winning bronze at the 81-kg, Under-21 men’s sporting event at the youth games.

In a statement issued by Sikkim’s department of sports and youth affairs, it was informed that this was the first-ever medal won by the state in the highest-level of national competition like Khelo India Youth Games 2020.

It is to be informed that the Sikkim contingent for Khelo India games this year comprised a total of 11 sports persons, including six boxers, four athletes and one weightlifter. The state team is being led by assistant director Dilip Chettri, along with two boxing coaches and one manager for athletics.
