Guwahati: Among the eight Northeastern states, Manipur is leading the medals tally at the ongoing 3rd Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati. However, a few like Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim are yet to open their accounts.
Despite this, all is not lost yet for these states as a slew of sporting events lined up till January 22 are likely to help them make some headway.
Not just NE states, upcoming events like badminton, boxing, football (U-17, U-21 boys), football (U-17, U-21 girls), hockey, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling will definitely give an edge to those states which have specialised teams in these sporting events.
According to the latest update by Khelo India Youth Games, of the eight NE states, only four have won gold — Manipur has pocketed nine gold medals, the highest among the states; next is Assam with six, followed by Tripura which won four and Mizoram with two gold medals to its kitty.
Although Arunachal has opened its account with one silver medal, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim are yet to make a breakthrough.
The third edition of Khelo India Youth Games is currently underway in Guwahati, Assam and will conclude on January 22.
