Gangtok: After the ban on plastic carry bags for more than a decade, Sikkim is now gearing up to ban the sale and use of packaged drinking water in the state.

Addressing the public on Global Sherpa day earlier this week, chief minister PS Golay announced that the state government will soon impose a complete ban on selling and usage of packaged plastic water bottles.

He made this announcement showing his concern over the harmful impacts on the environment due to the use of plastic. Urging everyone to use natural spring water, especially for commercial basis, the CM said that in the coming days shops and hotels will have to stop selling the plastic packaged water bottles.

In 2016, Sikkim restricted the usage of plastic water bottles in government functions and meetings along with styrofoam products.
