Gangtok: Dashain, also known as Bijaya Dasami, has officially commenced in Gangtok with the ‘Phulpati Shova Yatra’ that was carried out on Saturday morning.
As part of rituals, the royal ‘kalash’ (urn) is filled with holy water and is carried with banana stalks, jamara and sugar cane during the procession. The ‘yatra’ was organised by Thakurbari Durga Puja Committee and began from Thakurbari Mandir near MG Marg via Lall Bazar, Titanic Park and back to the Thakurbari temple.
During the festival, devotees gathered in huge numbers for the ‘yatra’ wearing their traditional attire and singing bhajans remembering Goddess Durga. Dashain is a celebration of “the triumph of good over evil”.
The Nepali-speaking Gorkha community of the state, along with several other places of the country, celebrates Dashain with full pomp and joy. They decorate their house beautifully and conduct holy ceremonies. On the day of ‘Tika’, they go and visit their elders nearby or far off and seek blessings from them and enjoy traditional delicacies.
