Guwahati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the by-election dates for Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday.

As per the ECI, the Himalayan state will go for by-election for three constituencies — Gangtok (East), Martam Rumtek (East) and Poklok Kamrang (South) — on October 21 and counting will take place on October 24.

Sikkim assembly elections were held in April this year in which the current ruling party Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) defeated the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) — who ruled the state for 25 years — with a very thin margin.

In total, of the 32 assembly seats, the SKM led by CM PS Golay won 17 seats and SDF led by Pawan K Chamling won 15.

The by-elections are being conducted as SKM candidate Kunga Nima Lepcha contested from two constituencies — Gangtok and Shyari. While, SDF candidate Pawan K Chamling won from Namchi Singithang and Poklok Kamrang, and another SDF candidate DT Lepcha won from Martam Rumtek and Gnathang Machong.

The SKM at present has 18 seats in the house, including two from SDF who joined SKM.

SDF, which had 11 seats in the house, now has a lone representative — Pawan Chamling, the president of SDF. However, the remaining 10 MLAs of SDF are now with BJP.

ECI has announced the schedule for by-elections to fill casual vacancy in the parliamentary constituency and state legislative assemblies of various states/UTs.

Meanwhile, bye-elections to assembly seats of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be held on October 21, announced the ECI. The constituencies that will go for polls are Ratabari (SC), Jania, Rangapara and Sonari in Assam; and Khonsa (West) in Arunachal Pradesh.
