SPYF members addressing the media persons at Press Club of Sikkim

Gangtok: Condemning the defection of all the 12 MLAs from Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and calling it undemocratic and unacceptable, the Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum (SPYF) demanded their resignation during a press conference at the Press Club of Sikkim in Gangtok on Friday. It also called for a mass rally on August 18 in the capital to voice against this trend.

“The MLAs joined the other party without the consent of the public who had given them the mandate by electing them. Such a move by the leaders is not acceptable. Therefore, the ones who have democratic values and are really activists can join us in the mass rally on August 18,” said Shankar Sharma, a member of SPYF.

“We also want the MLAs to submit their resignations on moral grounds as they no longer belong to the party from which people have made them win. If the leaders can disrespect the public mandate and play with their decisions, then we can conduct tender instead of elections. They have proved that they don’t have any feelings for the public,” he added.

Sharma also stressed on how the rural public support and love their party. “In rural areas, supporters from opposition parties quit talking and celebrating festivals together. They are extremely loyal to the party and the leaders and this move have really devastated them,” he said.

They further stressed that even the public should not accept this on civilised and democratic conditions. “They don’t deserve to be our representatives. They should contest from their new party, win and then call themselves people’s representatives otherwise they should not be allowed to enter the assembly,” added another SPYF member Rupen Karki.

People play a primary role in electing their representatives in a democracy; so the ones who betray the public should not be allowed to hold the mandate given, he added.
