Gangtok: Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) president and former Sikkim chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has spent Rs 8,84,70,283 on publishing books.
The figures were revealed in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly earlier this week by LN Sharma, minister of IPR in reply to a question raised by MLA BK Sharma during the Question Hour. “A total of 52 books were published under the direction of Pawan Chamling from the year 1999-2019,” he said.
According to Sharma, the bills for the first 45 books amounting to Rs 7,58,94,283 were cleared. However, Rs 1,25,76,000 -- the bills for the remaining books -- were still pending.
Sharma further informed that these books were published under the interest and direction of the former CM and there were no signs of any tenders that took place for the same.
Some of Chamling’s books are – Mero Sapana ko Sikkim (Volume I-IX), Sikkim Bhraman, Pawan Chamling Champion of Social Justice and Pawan Chamling Longest Chief Minister of India, among others.
The ongoing budget session of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly is being boycotted by the opposition SDF, except two ‘rebel’ MLAs: GT Dhungel of Upper Tadong and Em Prasad Sharma of Namcheybong constituencies.
Chamling is the founder and president of SDF, which governed the state for five successive terms since 1993. He is currently the longest serving chief minister for any Indian state after independence.
Chamling is also a prolific Nepali language writer and recipient of the Bhanu Puraskar (2010) awarded by the Sikkim Sahitya Parishad. He writes under the pen name, ‘Pawan Chamling Kiran’.
