The move comes after the internal complaints committee of the institution finds Prof Silajit Guha guilty of molesting a student of the department on May 5
Gangtok: Sikkim University’s executive council has terminated the services of the head of department (HoD) of mass communication, Prof Silajit Guha, over a case of alleged molestation of a student.
The incident occurred on May 5, when both the accused and the victim were reportedly attending a wedding ceremony. Initially, the victim was hesitant in sharing her plight. However, the incident spread like wildfire on social media and there was a massive display of support towards the victim, especially from the Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA). Following this, the victim filed a complaint with the Internal Complaints’ Committee (ICC) of the university on May 12.
Following charges of molestation, the professor was removed from the post of HoD and debarred from entering the department with immediate effect. The order was signed by SU registrar TK Kaul.
The matter was handled by the university's ICC, after which the report was forwarded to V-C Prof Avinash Khare on June 10.
An executive council's meeting was held recently at Barad Sadan in 5th Mile. The council consisted of the V-C, registrar and deans from different schools of the university. The meeting decided to terminate the professor’s services.
SUSA president Palsang Tamang said that the students had demanded justice for the victim. “The SUSA has brought forward the institution culture to bring justice to such crimes. We want to spread the message that women should not be supressed. Hopefully, more victims will come forward and such henious crimes can be stopped from happening in our university. The meeting purely shows that the professor was guilty,” he said.
