Gangtok: Amid massive protests from students, Prof Silajit Guha, the former head of mass communication at Sikkim University, appeared before the Internal Complaints’ Committee (ICC) of the central institute and the victim on Wednesday.
Earlier, the ICC had recommended the removal of the associate professor from his services with immediate effect. This was after four students alleged that Prof Guha molested one of his students during a wedding ceremony in Ranipool.
Appearing before the panel, Prof Guha expressed his innocence in the alleged incident and said that he has been cooperating with the ICC. There are 14 members in the ICC including teachers, students and external representatives.
Confirming the allegations, Sikkim University Student’s Association (SUSA) president Palsang Tamang, while talking to EastMojo, said that the decision to remove the accused from his post was taken in the ICC of the university. Prof Guha will be debarred from attending his official duty until the ongoing inquiry is over.
Previously, after week-long discussions among students, the victim finally mustered courage to speak up and an official complaint was lodged with the department. Thereafter, three more students shared similar harassment cases that they faced with Guha, Tamang said.
It is also broadly alleged that Professor Guha had faced similar allegations a few years ago as he was allegedly found in an ‘embarrassing position’ with a student in one of the department rooms of the university.
