Gangtok: With the assembly elections just around the corner, and politicking at its peak in Sikkim, the Bhaichung Bhutia-led Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) will announce its party president on Thursday.

The decision was made in a central executive committee meet of the party on Tuesday.

An election to the position will be held on Thursday and the result is to be announced on the same day.

The HSP, which was launched in May last year by the 43-year-old former striker, is likely to contest about 18-20 seats in the assembly polls to the 32-member House.

Meanwhile, the meeting has also designated seven members of the CEC to form a committee to foresee and conduct political parleys with other parties.

The meeting has also directed the yet to be formed committee to be considerate of any opposition party so long as they agree in principle to four issues – the restoration of seats for the Sikkimese of Nepali origin as well as the removal of the immigrant tag for this community, immediate allotment of reserved seats for the Limboo and Tamang communities as per the order of the Supreme Court, immediate declaration of tribal status for the remaining 11 left out communities as per the provisions of article 371F of the Constitution and urgent and decisive action against the massive corruption in Sikkim and to work tirelessly towards making Sikkim a corruption free state.

Hinting at a possible alliance with the BJP, Bhutia had earlier told PTI in an interview, that serious deliberation were underway with the BJP and other like-minded parties along the same lines.

The former footballer had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Darjeeling and the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections from Siliguri, and resigned from the Mamta Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Feb last year.
