Gangtok: The Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum on Sunday took out a rally, ‘Gangtok Chalo’, from Gyalshing to Legship in West Sikkim to protest against the state government’s lackadaisical attitude towards implementation of its promise to upgrade the Gyalshing District Hospital.

The youth forum alleged that the government did not even fulfill 50% requirements required for the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). The forum has been demanding the implementation of IPHS standards at the Gyalshing hospital.

In a statement, the protestors said, “The health secretary of the state was speaking to a social networking site today where he was clearly trying his best to defend their failure. We have already seen the changes in the hospital and we have mentioned it. The number of manpower has definitely gone up after the continuous pressure exerted by us. But the present manpower is far from sufficient. In the IPHS norms there are two categories, the essentials and the desirables. The health secretary did not even touch the desirables in the list. Though an ultrasonography machine has been installed in the hospital people get its service only twice in the month. Not even Fifty per cent of the requirements as per IPHS has been fulfilled in the hospital.”

“The participation of very ordinary people in the march was heartening shows that they have suffered the most due to lack of service at the hospital. Many of them have lost their dear ones at a very young age. Some of them have lost their bread earner of the family. Their unheard voice found a space today” said a protestor.

During a similar protest undertaken by the forum in July last year, the government officials had assured in writing that 90% of their demands would be fulfilled. However, the protesters accused that the promises made by the health secretary and other officials have turned out to be an outright lie.

“Our movement will end only when the promises given in the written assurance is fulfilled,” resolved the protestors.
