Gangtok: The third edition of ‘Sikkim Organic Day’ was celebrated at Manan Bhawan in Gangtok on Friday. Apart from celebrating the organic farming culture of the state, the government also organised ‘Krishi Unnati Mela’ in this year’s addition.
Addressing the programme, CM Pawan Kumar Chamling congratulated and thanked the farmers and the public for adopting the idea of organic farming in the state and providing leadership in the field of sustainable agricultural practices. He acknowledged and appreciated the contribution of farmers and every individual and the government for making Sikkim a fully organic farming state. “With this, Sikkim has given a positive message worldwide,” said the CM. Sikkim has been appreciated as a role model in organic farming across the globe for its culture of organic farming.
“Sikkim has set an outstanding example to the world by transforming itself into an organic farming state becoming a model in sustainable agricultural practices,” he added.
The CM also urged the public to work harder to strengthen the Sikkim Organic Farming Mission, to give continuity to the success, and not to keep any land fallow, thereby ensuring surplus production. Urging the farmers and unemployed youths to opt for organic farming as a profession, Chamling stated “Agriculture as a profession will never be out of fashion or outdated.”
He also announced to make Sikkim a self-sufficient state in diary products and perishable vegetable products and to achieve self-sufficiency in food grains within five years under the Five Year Mission of Sikkim.
