Tarey Bhir in south Sikkim

Namchi: Realising the true potential of Tarey Bhir in the tourism sector, the Sikkim government has decided to resume a state-level kite festival after a gap of about eight years. The two-day event will be held on December 31 and January 1, 2019.

Announcing this, Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation chairman Rup Narayan Rai said that the aim of the festival is to make Tarey Bhir a major tourist destination. Ujjwal Saha, president of the Kite Society of Ahmedabad, will be the judge in the competition, which will offer cash prizes to the winners, Rai added.

Tarey Bhir is regarded as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Sikkim. Located in the village of Sadam in South Sikkim district, Tarey Bhir is also called a geological wonder – the 10,000-ft-long ridge ends in an abrupt drop of 3,500 ft. There is a path over the edge of the ridge on which one can walk and enjoy the enchanting views of the Rangit and Teesta rivers below, besides Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri, Tendong Hill, Nathula, Jelepla and Mt Kangchenjunga.

As per Milan Gurung, president of the kite festival organising committee, many artistes will perform in the festival that will also include a helicopter joyride as part of the schedule. State chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling will also be present in the festival as its chief guest.

The kite festival, which was held for the first time in 2010, was called off after it got into to several bureaucratic and logistic tangles despite the state government’s push in terms of grants and funds. “Due to the entire Tarey Bhir strech falling under forest land, the festival could not be held for many years,” said a member of the organising committee.

With the resumption of the festival, organisers are now hopeful that Tarey bhir will once again see tourist traction. In the near future, paragliding activities are also being developed along with eco-friendly accommodation in the area, sources said.
