Guwahati: At a time when air pollution has become one of the major concerns in and around the national capital, northeastern cities emerged as some with the best Air Quality Index (AQI) in the country.

Taking pride in the capital city of his state, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga took to Twitter to announce that Aizawl has the cleanest air in all 132 cities listed in a daily bulletin by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

According to the CPCB data, other cities like Amaravati, Bengaluru, Bilaspur, Brajrajnagar, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Coimbatore, Davanagere, Eloor, Ernakulam, and Hubbali also had ‘Good’ Air Quality.

Air Quality Indices of cities in Northeast India:

According to real-time data on the website of the Central Pollution Control Board, here’s the latest data available on the air quality of cities in the Northeast with Shillong at the top of the list with respect to the last 24 hours data. Guwahati has the worst air quality as compared to other cities of the northeast in the list.

Aizawl: Mizoram’s capital city Aizawl has very less polluted air with inhalable and harmless PM10 being the most prominent pollutant. Aizawl’s Air Quality Index today is 18.

Kohima: Nagaland’s city Kohima falls under the good (0-50 AQI) air quality category. The city has very less polluted air with inhalable and harmless PM10 being the most prominent pollutant. Kohima’s Air Quality Index today is 41.

Naharlagun: Arunachal’s Naharlagun falls under the satisfactory (51-100 AQI) air quality category. The city has relatively less polluted air with inhalable and harmless PM10 being the most prominent pollutant. Naharlagun’s Air Quality Index today is 70.

Shillong: Meghalaya’s capital Shillong falls under the good (0-50 AQI) air quality category. The city has the least polluted air with Sulphur dioxide being the most prominent pollutant. Shillong’s Air Quality Index today is just 14 today.

Agartala: Tripura’s capital Agartala falls under the good (0-50 AQI) air quality category. The city has relatively less polluted air with inhalable and harmless PM10 being the most prominent pollutant. Agartala’s Air Quality Index today is 34.

Guwahati: Assam’s capital city Guwahati falls under the Moderate (101-200 AQI) air quality category. The city has relatively a lot more polluted air with PM2.5 (Fine particulate matter) being the most prominent pollutant. Guwahati’s Air Quality Index today is 179.

What is PM 2.5?

PM 2.5 is an air pollutant that is a concern for people’s health when levels in the air are high. PM 2.5 are tiny particles in the air that reduce visibility and cause the air to appear hazy when levels are elevated. Outdoor PM 2.5 levels are most likely to be elevated on days with little or no wind or air mixing.

The air quality of Guwahati showed a recent improvement after 4:30 pm on Tuesday, with an AQI of 55 (Satisfactory) as recorded from Pan Bazar with Sulphur dioxide as the most prominent pollutant and 34 (Good) as recorded from Railway colony with harmless PM10 particles as the most dominant pollutant.
