Aizawl: Well-known social activist from Mizoram Vanramchhuangi on Thursday announced she would launch a sit-in silent protest on Friday to demand justice for the damage caused to the environment and to demonstrate the environmental violations in the state.

The social activist, popularly known by her pen name ‘Ruatfela Nu’, said that environment, river and forest lands are being destroyed injudiciously by different projects in the name of development, which also wrecked the social and economic dynamics of the indigenous people.

“I will launch a silent strike from Friday in front of state Environment Forest & Climate Change office in Aizawl at 11:30 am to demand environmental justice to
demonstrate the environmental violations due to the disregard by development projects in the state,” she said.

She would also submit a representation to the Principal Chief Conservation of Forest, demanding a stay order on construction or widening works of national highways being executed by National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) besides environmental protection.

Ruatfela Nu said she would also launch a protest and awareness campaign in other districts where widening work or construction of national highways are undertaken.

She said that she has been campaigning for environmental protection and ill effects of road projects without proper assessment and injudicious disposal of soil developed from the construction site since the last three years but to no effect.

She alleged that the NHIDCL has completely disregarded and violated environment and social considerations while disposing of soils which has wiped away biodiversity and also severely affected rivers and smaller tributaries.

According to her, rivers and smaller tributaries are covered by muck and 99.9 per cent of the state’s seasonal and perennial rivers are no longer visible due to environmental destruction caused by road construction.

“The enormous siltation which has destroyed agricultural lands and polluted our main water subsistence is a result of disregard and negligence of Environmental laws and regulations by NHIDCL and all governmental stakeholders involved at every level,” she said.

Last month, Ruatfela Nu had also filed a PIL at the Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court seeking a probe into the rampant smuggling of areca nuts to Myanmar through Mizoram.

The PIL case includes a request for CBI investigation into the cross-border smuggling racket of areca nuts evading taxes and to eradicate the problems faced by areca nut growers due to the rampant illegal smuggling.
